  DESCRIPTION:

Since 1979, the Intensive English Program (IEP) at West Virginia University has offered courses in academic and professional English. Providing instruction at six levels from beginner to advanced, the program offers a core curriculum of communication skills, reading and writing, grammar, vocabulary, and American culture. Optional courses in TOEFL preparation, TOEIC preparation, business English and computer assisted language learning are also available at no extra charge for full-time students. Students attend classes for 21 to 30 hours a week. The IEP supplies all necessary textbooks. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, students participate in five hours of mandatory classwork. Tuesdays and Thursdays are divided between core classes and optional courses. Tests are conducted at the beginning and end of each session to determine each student's level of proficiency. An optional TOEFL exam is administered at mid-semester for a nominal fee. Extra-curricular activities are arranged each semester. These include a Conversation Partners Program, a weekly Conversation Table, day trips, and sports activities. In the summer session, weekend trips to Washington D.C. and New York are available at an additional cost.
