  DESCRIPTION:

The English Language Institute offers 6 levels of proficiency from high-beginning to advanced. Levels 1 through 3 concentrate on preparatory academic skills; in levels 4 through 6 attention is given to language skill development across the curriculum, including content courses. Courses range from content: United States History, American Literature, Debate, Drama, Intercultural Communication to ESP courses: English for Business, Research and Technical Writing. EFL Teacher Training workshops are offered once a year.

 LOCATION:

The University of Utah, home to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, is located in the state's capital city. From its vantage point on the foothills of the snow-capped Wasatch Mountain range, the University looks west over the Great Salt Lake, providing an inspiring vista in which to live and study. Salt Lake City is situated at the "Crossroads of the West." A wide variety of recreational and cultural activities, from live theater, concerts, and a major film festival to winter skiing and summer hiking, are available close by. Utah's fine, light, powder snow attracts skiers from all over the world.

 APPLICATION INFORMATION:

Students must send an application, $50 non-refundable application fee, and a financial statement showing $5645 of support for a 15- week semester. Transfer students must submit a transfer report.

 EDUCATIONAL SERVICES/OPPORTUNITIES:

Academic, cross-cultural, and immigration counseling is provided. Upper-level nonmatriculated students may take credit classes through Continuing Education. Upper level matriculated students may receive credit-equivalency or credit.

 STUDENT SERVICES:

Students receive a university ID card which entitles them to university privileges such as use of library, computer and language labs, discounts on movies, concerts, and city bus passes. Students can also join the campus recreation facilities center for a nominal fee. ELI program activities include field trips, parties, and trips to scenic areas within the state.

 TRANSPORTATION:

City bus service is available; free shuttle buses operate on campus.

EFL Teacher Training, International Management Training, administration of institutional TOEFL, TWE, TOEIC, TSE, and SPEAK tests. Special summer language/excursion and short-term programs are also available.
