  DESCRIPTION:

The Intensive English Program provides 7 levels of instruction in the skill areas of grammar, writing, listening/speaking and reading in preparation for academic classes.

 LOCATION:

The University of Houston-Downtown is located on a small river in the middle of the Houston downtown business district overlooking skyscrapers. Everything from food to shopping and entertainment is nearby and affordable.

 APPLICATION INFORMATION:

International students may contact the ELI by letter, fax, or e-mail to get an application and materials mailed to them. They apply to the International Student Office. I-20s are issued to prospective students whose applications meet the eligibility requirements (high school graduation with the equivalency of a "C" average). ELI officials will help students apply.

 EDUCATIONAL SERVICES/OPPORTUNITIES:

ELI students who successfully complete the program may attend academic classes at UHD without TOEFL scores. A full range of international student services are available. ELI graduates receive 3 credit hours toward their degree.

 STUDENT SERVICES:

Orientations, fieldtrips, parties, afternoon city activities, intramural sports, jazz concerts, student council activities, ELI magazine staffing, university and city festivals are just a few of the activities offered to ELI students. ELI students have access to university facilities as well: computer and language laboratories, library, gymnasium, weight room, cafeteria, study areas, and health center with insurance.

 TRANSPORTATION:

City buses bring students to university's door; excellent public transportation.
