DESCRIPTION:
The University of Pennsylvania, founded by Benjamin Franklin in
1740, is one of eight private universities known as the Ivy League. Penn
has 4 undergraduate schools and 12 graduate schools in which 22,000
students are enrolled (including 3,500 international students) and a faculty
of 4,000 including 9 who have received Nobel Prizes in recent years. In
1999, US News & World Report ranked Penn as the 6th best national university
out of a total 228. Penn was the first university in the USA to establish a
medical school and a business school (Wharton), and Penn is the home of the
world's first electronic digital computer (ENIAC). Located minutes from
Philadelphia's historic and cultural attractions, the tree-filled campus
consists of 140 modern and 19th century buildings, including several
libraries, gymnasiums, theaters, and museums holding extensive collections
of artistic works and archeological objects from around the world.
The Intensive Program has six 8-week sessions each year, with Week 1 devoted
to language testing and placement and to academic and cultural orientation.
Weeks 2-8 provide 20 hours of instruction from Monday through Friday for
full-time students. There are 8 levels of proficiency from beginning to
advanced; 35 courses that emphasize language skills or content such as
business or academic preparation. Part-time students can study, 5, 10, or
15 hours/week depending on their level. Student (F-1) visas are issued to
full-time students only.

HOUSING OPTIONS:
Most students live on campus in dormitory rooms or very
close to campus in International House. Homestays also are available.
HOUSING COSTS:
Dormitory room is $1045 for 8 weeks.
LOCATION:
The University of Pennsylvania is located a few minutes from the
center of Philadelphia, the 5th largest metropolitan city in the USA and one
of the most historic. New York City, Washington DC, and Atlantic Ocean
beaches are all just a few hours away.

processing of an I-20 for an F-1 (student) visa.
EDUCATIONAL SERVICES/OPPORTUNITIES:
Tests include the Institutional TOEFL,
TOEIC, and SPEAK. Certificates of completion are awarded to eligible
students. The coordinator of the Intensive Program issues letters of
recommendation upon request.
Students at the advanced level can apply to take credit courses offered by
the University's College of General Studies or the Wharton School's Evening
Division. The application must include evidence of proficiency in English
as well as official academic records and a translation of them in English.
Tuition for credit courses is higher than for courses in the Intensive Program.
STUDENT SERVICES:
The Student Center contains university catalogs and
admission guides, and the staff is available to assist students. The
Student Center also organizes social and cultural events and helps students
with questions about living in the USA. Students receive e-mail accounts
and access to the Internet. Computer and language labs are available.
Students can participate in the Conversation Partners Program, which matches
them with students at Penn.
TRANSPORTATION:
Most students travel to Philadelphia by airplane, and they
arrive at the Philadelphia International Airport, which is located only 7
miles/11 km. from the University of Pennsylvania. Some students travel to
Philadelphia by train from New York City or from Washington, DC. The Amtrak
Train Station is only four blocks from Penn.
OTHER PROGRAMS
DESCRIPTION:
In January, July , and August, the ELP offers Conversation &
Culture a program to improve oral skills and learn about life in the USA.
In July and August, the ELP offers the Summer Institute for International
Business Students a program for pre-MBA students. Throughout the year,
the ELP offers courses in the early evening. One course that is especially
popular with student in the Intensive Program is TOEFL Preparation. At
other times of the year, the ELP offers courses for business executives and
professionals from fields such as medicine, architecture, and foreign
language pedagogy.
