1699년 지금의 Ocean Springs에 최초 영구 정착지가 세워졌다. 1763년 프랑스가 Mississippi의 동쪽을 영국에게 양도하면서 인구의 유입이 시작되었다. 이주자들은 주로 Virgiula, Georgia, Carolinas로부터 왔다.
1798년 주로서의 Mississippi가 되었고 지금의 Tennessee경계까지 확장된 것은 1804년 이다. 1813년 스페인 영토 West 1 = lorida가 첨가되었다. 4년후 Mississippi는 주가 되었다.
1840년 열악한 인디언들은 그들의 땅을 내주고 Mississippi는 목화, river commerce, 노예 노동력을 기반으로 번영의 시대로 들어갔다.
Mississippi는 남부의 주들 중에서 두번째로 북부 연방으로부터 탈퇴하였다. Mississippi내의 큰 전투는 1863년 Vicksburg에 있었으며 Vicksburg National Military Park 에서 전투지를 보존하고 있다.
남북 전쟁후는 혼란과 불안정의 시기로 많은 재산이 불탔고 단지 4/1의 군인들이 전쟁후 돌아왔으며 재건축은 경제적 , 정치적, 혼란을 의미하기도 했다. 시간이 지남에 따라 점점 나아졌으나 경제 사회적 패턴을 개조하는데 시간은 거걸렸다. 1960년대 중반에 이르러서 산업적 소득이 농업소득을 넘어섰다.
Mississippi 강의 유명함은 작가들과 음악가들에 의해 갈채를 받았다. Mississippi 주의 역사와 유산은 노벨 문학상의 저자 William Faulkner, 소설가 Eudora Welty, 극작가 Tennessee Williams에 의해 불멸하며 미국음악은 Blue 음ㅇ악의 B. B. king, 오페라 가수 Leontyne Price, 록켄롤의 왕 Elvis Presley에 의해 풍요로와졌다.
